The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that screening for autism begin with children at 18 months and again at 24 months. Several studies, such as those conducted at the University of California – San Diego and the University of Washington, find that evaluating toddlers from the age of 1 is an effective time to begin assessing risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
There are notable established screening programs, such as the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers – Revised (M-CHAT-R), that are effective in quantifying a child’s risk for autism. Early detection can play such a profound role in effective treatment that The Center For Disease Control now monitors preschoolers in its efforts to evaluate emerging information about autism and promising treatment methods.
By introducing proven ABA therapy into an autistic child’s life at a very young age — especially if the child’s parents are also trained and engaged — the prospect has a much better likelihood of achieving more milestones at a faster pace. Language skills, social interaction and overall behavior and communication are among the areas where early intensive ABA treatments can provide long-range benefits.
At Stepping Stones ABA we welcome the opportunity to screen your toddler, and if appropriate, devise and implement a individualized ABA program. To discuss your child’s situation and arrange for a screening, please call us at 919-810-1459, or fill out our online form to the right.
